“The Light Lab makes my heart feel happy!”

The Light Lab is officially open in the Studio and friends are so excited to mix colors of light!  The Light Lab will now be a center that’s open weekly for children to continue to explore throughout the year.


Jahir: Color change.  The colors dance!  I want to color change… here we go!

Victoria: I like blue.  I make blue… blue is my favorite.

Emely: It’s like were mixing potions.  Like scientists.


Jacob: I can feel the colors.  I feel blue.  My hands are turning blue.

Aria: The Light Lab makes my heart feel happy!

Ethan: It’s like I’m making magic.  I want to find red.  I find it!

Geo: This Light Lab is my favorite.


Ava: Romeo, now you’re red!  You’re colors.

Farah: Can you make pink?

Yanelis: So many colors.  Look! We need green.

Matthew: It got on the ceiling.  I find the red.  The ceiling is red from making lights!


Savannah: How did light get in there?

Isaiah: It tuned my hand red.  And your face red!

Rachel: It changes colors.  It looks like a rainbow!  It makes my hands green.

The Light Lab is officially OPEN in the Studio and friends have loved mixing new colors with light and comparing it to all the color mixing they recently did with paint!  Again, a HUGE thank you to everyone that made generous donations during GoFundMe’s “Teacher Appreciation Campaign” last year!




Elijah: Wow, the Light Lab can glow.  It mixes colors just like us!  It’s like were scientists.  I found out how to make purple.  Twist blue an red to make purple!

Santi: I found my favorite color at the Light Lab.

Isaac: By putting all of the knobs up, I made a color that matches the wall.

Julian: I love you, Light Lab!

Theo: I didn’t know that light could change colors.




Daniela: Twisting the knobs looks like I’m driving a car.  I mixed a fire color!

Bella: The Light Lab makes it look like a party in here!

Alina: Pear, pear, pear… I made pear green.

Betsegaw: It’s round like a pizza.  Look at this… the wall is pink now!  When I get close, I turn pink.

Ahmari: It’s on the wall.  And I see the color on my shirt.





Brandon: All the colors together make white.  This is the coolest thing in the world!  I’m so happy I get to play with it.  Look at all these rainbow colors I can make.

Kate: I didn’t know this was here.  It’s so cool, like a DJ.  Or like your cooking.

Connor: My shirt is the same color of this blue.

Luca: It’s like diamonds in the sky!

Mateo: I want to try to make grey.




Julian: It’s like a party… an art party!  Party in the art group!

Alden: I’ll always turn on blue first, because it’s my favorite.  Did you know blue is the color of ice?  And water.  And red is the color of lava.

Nazeer: This is so color-y.  This color blue looks like fish could swim in there.

Asa: Whoa, this thing is so crazy.  If you mix these colors, it makes new colors!




Daniela: I want to hug it.  I want to tell it “I love you!”

Geo: I make blue.  My favorite color!  I want to make pink.  That’s Hailey’s favorite color.

Stephanie: I see green on the ceiling!

Joelle: I was wondering what was happening in here.  I could see the colors over the wall!  It looks like there’s a party going on.


“I can’t do this… how can I pick a favorite picture when I love them all?”

As promised, I have a follow up to yesterdays videos of children light painting!  This was a fun experiment that we are still trouble shooting because it’s not possible for the Studio to get as dark as it really needs to be.  We tried long exposures, as well as incorporating the flash, which ultimately had better results.  However, before we began this process, children spent some time looking at their photographs that they’ve taken up until this point.  Friends had pages and pages and PAGES of photographs and they really enjoyed looking back and sharing their favorites with their friends.





Demetrius: Hey, I see you right there… see?  Phoenix, I see you right there!

Maceo: Wow… I see our pictures!  I took a picture of you Chris.  Look… see?

Chris: What is this a picture of?  I don’t know!

After flipping through our pages of photos, we selected photo’s based on different categories. Some of the categories were:

* Which photo makes you the happiest?

* Which photo is the most mysterious?

* Which photo is the silliest?

* Which is your favorite photo of a person?

* Which is your favorite photo that you’ve taken?



Wallace: This one is mysterious because I don’t know what you’re talking about in the picture.

Jude: I can’t do this… how can I pick a favorite when I love them all?

Minna: The one of my mom makes me the happiest.

Wallace: My tummy is sticking out… that’s the funniest one!

Owen: My favorite person here is Ms.Lauchlan… that’s my favorite picture with a person!

Next, we looked at some mysterious images of light paintings and friends made predictions about what they were and how they were made.


Jude: It’s dark.

Phoenix: The photo looks scratchy… it’s blurry!

Demetrius: Letters… orange letters.

Gabby: It’s a person made out of lines.

Elias: Are they shadows?

Jasper: They shined a flashlight and took a picture at the same time.

Owen: Are they glow sticks?

Michael: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z… but not “now I know my ABC’s”… it doesn’t say that.

After looking at some examples of light painting, we began experimenting with making our own in the Studio!  Friends took turns being the photographer, while the rest modeled and danced with flashlights.  Children enjoyed using the big DSLR camera on the tripod and really liked directing friends while they were using the flashlights (see videos from yesterday for them in action!)





Gabby: I have an idea… you, Chris, go behind Elias.  Put the flashlight by your mouth.  Nayahris, stand next to Chris.  Maceo, you stand in front of Elias.  Ok… great… 1, 2, 3!

“Tinkerbell floated over the wall to Ms.Lauchlan’s Room!”


Today was a wet, cold and dark day, which made for the perfect kind of day to continue to introduce the light table. Friends worked together creating an elaborate scene at the light table with a very imaginative story. This really brightened up my day rainy day!

Cole: It looks like Tinkerbell is trapped in here. She’s glowing on the light table!
Elias: This is the Wonderworld.
Cole: She’s stuck in the crystals. She doesn’t want to grow up.
Leah: Can we get her out?
Cole: She’s twirling. She’s so dizzy. But she’s still swirling.
Elias: Here’s a tower slide for fairies.
Cole: Tinkerbell’s friend is Silverness. Tinkerbell is at the top of the tower… she’s scared.
Elias: All my Tinkerbell’s are scared at the top!
Cole: All the Tinkerbell’s are in the yellow rectangles. Sometimes in the blue squares, too.
Leah: Tinkerbell’s stuck in this one now!
Cole: We need to get her out. The elevator was a nice elevator and got her out of the cube. The mean elevator just took her back and tricked her and took her back. She fell all the way to the bottom of the cube.
Elias: I got her!
Cole: Now I got her and she’s plop in a bubble. She’s floating away, it’s a magic bubble.
Leah: She could live in the bubble. She’s in there a long, long time. When all the people leave from Capital City, Tinkerbell will be like, “where did all the kids go?”
Cole: Someone will go inside the art room and find out she’s in the bubble. They can’t reach her because she’s all the way at the art room ceiling! No one can pop the bubble… she’s gonna be with Ms.Cushner all night living in the art room!
Leah: It’s spooky here at night. I think she would be scared. There might be vampires.
Cole: Or zombies. It came for Tinkerbell but he couldn’t get her. She’s in a crystal now… it’s green. Her wings are trapped in another crystal. She can’t fly, she’s just hopping and rocking all around. She’s gone, she floated over the wall to Ms.Lauchlans room!
Leah: Let her out of the bubble!
Cole: Silverness is back! I put her in the bubble with Tinkerbell. All the friends. Now she’s in a swirl.
Elias: I popped the swirl… she’s free!
