“I’m making something pretty amazing!”

During the first six weeks of a new school year, children explore new materials in different areas of their classroom.  Learning about new materials is a great way to build relationships with both classmates and new teachers! 

By the third week of school, children were using oil pastels, crayons, markers, dot markers, rock crayons and twist crayons in the art area. It was exciting to compare and contrast these drawing materials, as they all have very unique qualities! Soon, children will begin coming to the Studio for art groups where they will continue to explore a variety of 2-D and 3-D materials.

Soleil: Why are they called rock crayons?  Can we use them outside?

Hailey: I rubbed it with my fingers.  Now I can draw with my them!

Dayana: The black oil pastel looks like licorice.  This one looks like a minty color.  This one is a peachy color.

Asa: I made a plan for how to build an airplane. 

Africa Grace: When you use the side of the rock crayon, it makes you draw faster.

Nanahi: It twists.  I’m just writing.

Savannah: I’m doing it.  I’m twisting it up high!

Jair: Can it twist to the ceiling?

Adele: It’s really hard to smudge black.  Maybe because it’s dark?  Look… I’m drawing with my fingers!  The more you smudge it, the lighter it gets.  I just turned red to pink!  You have to scrub it.

Kennedy: All the colors are making the rainbow.

Vanessa: It looks like lipstick.

Sallie Chapel: I’m making something pretty amazing!

Hope: Those are details that I made.  I added arms and a mouth to the ghost.

Sebastian: It turned my finger green.  It’s getting all the colors on my hand!  Look at all the colors on my fingers.

Isaiah: Can you draw with the back of the pastel?

Amie: Put the top on so it doesn’t dry up.

As children in Mrs.Balk’s class were drawing outside, many began creating treasure maps of the playground.  There was a lot of enthusiasm around maps as children were studying the location of playground structures, the sandbox and the garden.  Children began trading maps with their friends and wishing each other “good luck” as they set out to find treasure on the playground!

Frances: I’m going to make treasure maps for Abbie to find the treasure.

Abbie: I’m making two treasure maps for at home.  Zach and daddy are on a team and me and mommy are on a team.

Art groups begin in the Studio on Monday! Hooray!

“I make a snake with legs…he’s a transformer. Now he’s a juice box!”

Rose Red and Lavender Purple groups have been continuing to work on sculptures, and have been using a variety of materials to help them working three-dimensionally.  Children spent more time creating sculptures with clay, and learned how to use a wire cutter to safely remove sculptures from the table.

Christian: The wire cutter looks like a jumprope.  It goes under the clay and it cut it a little bit off the table.

Adriana: It looks like a rope and a cutter.

Alli: It was easy to use it to pull the clay.  You didn’t know I could use it?

Esther: When you bend the wire, it looks like a rainbow.

Amal: Wow, it’s working!  It did!  It’s not stuck to the table.

Naomi: The wire cutter looks like a spider web.

Amen: It looks like a puller.  I’m being responsible.  It’s not on the table now.

Jariel: It looks like a fishing hook!

Children used new tools to draw in clay, followed by collage materials to add details to their sculptures.

Autumn: It’s a seahorse.  Poke it, it moves.

Jariel: This is Jimmy.  Jimmy likes to surf, but he lost his legs.  We need to take him to the doctor.  That’s his brother.  Now I need to make the baby, his name is Jayden.  Don’t eat him, or he will cry.  Don’t forget his little arms.  He wants to play.

Konone: I’m making a hot dog with fruit on top.  The sparkles are the fruit on top.

Jax: I found my bird.  He’s over here.  We have to use more sparkles.  I think he’s done now, he’s sleeping.  Wow, a new hat for the birdie!

Christian: I wrote my name in the clay.  Now I’ll squish it and make it like a flat pancake!

Bennett: It’s a snake.  It can just slither around… so strange.

Siah: It looks like the letter “I” and I can make an “S” like Siah!

The following week, children worked with Model Magic to create sculptures.  Friends used dot markers while they worked to change the color of their Model Magic.  Children enjoyed mixing and blending colors to enhance their work!

Christian: I know, that’s Model Magic.  I could see M-O-D-E-L M-A-G-I-C and that says Model Magic.

Sophia: I likes it.

Amy: It feels good.  It feels smooth.

Amal: Model Magic is stretchy like a band-aid.

Christian: I’m making a Sonic snowman, isn’t that fun?  He’s a hedgehog, like a porkypine.  Now I can make his friend Tails!

Belen: I made two friends.  Best friends.  They are best friends forever.  They playing hide and seek.

Cory: When you pull it apart, it looks like a mustache.
